To activate the chat bar, all you need do is press "return", and the cursor should activate there. This typically means that you need to press "return" again after completing a single line of chat if you wish to keep chatting. Chat is more than just roleplay. We have activated a number of commands, enabled you to throw your voice, and enabled emotes with a variety of in game functions beyond just animations and skill checks.
FOR MORE HELP: /help
Entering /help in the chat bar will produce a list of commands available to you.
You can generate in game documentation similar to this also by typing /item manual which creates a book that you can read in game. To get rid of the manual just chat /item manual again and it will be destroyed.
OUT OF CHARACTER SPEECH
If you must speak out of character you should use tells. When you need to announce something out of character to all, enclose your chat in parentheses like so: (Good Night!)
CHAT PUPPETS
You may speak, or emote through one of your NPC companions. Precede your chat with either a ; or a , as follows:

EMOTES
Bracketing text between two * performs an emote. This applies to simple spoken text by the PC. Example: *bows in the general direction of the newcomers* Emotes are also capable of performing actions on some objects in range. To see objects within range, emote *looks around*. For more information about an object which shows up after a look around, you may then *examine (object)*. Substitute the name of the object for (object).
*looks around* is also available as a command on the rotary menu so that you can quick slot it rather than type it over and over.
